Howard Hughes Medical Institute Integrating Medicine in Basic Science (HHMI-IMBS)
In partnership with colleagues in the School of Medicine, the Biotechnology Program administered the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Integrating Medicine in Basic Science (HHMI-IMBS) translational research program from 2006 - 2014 (HHMI Med-Into-Grad Initiative Grant 56006769, PI Prof. Fred Meyers). The UC Davis HHMI IMBS program introduced PhD students in biomedical research and engineering to the world of clinical medicine, with the goal of preparing them for careers in clinical academic or industrial biopharma settings. Over the course of the award period, this novel training program brought 65 fellows into clinical settings early in their training to promote innovative "bench to bedside" problem-solving approaches and the development of new biotech therapeutics, diagnostics and related technologies for human health.
Biotech Program Director, Dr. Judy Kjelstrom, served on the program implementation team as chair of recruitment and retention and played a key role in mentoring trainees throughout the eight years of the award period. Program leaders, Dr. Ann C. Bonham, Dr. John A. Robbins and Dr. Anne A. Knowlton, developed the one-year, multifaceted curriculum, which included diverse clinical experiences and rotations, as well as interactive training and courses with medical students, basic scientists, clinician scientists and clinician-educators. The program used cardiovascular disease (broadly defined to include obesity, diabetes, heart failure, stroke, etc.) and oncology/cancer biology as models for integrating medical principles and clinical approaches to patient care into the trainees' basic research programs. Key training elements included clinical immersion with didactics, journal clubs, and special projects.
Along with the NIH BTP, this program helped to lay the foundation for expanded graduate training efforts in human health at UC Davis. Dr. Judy Kjelstrom, Biotechnology Program director emerita, served as a member of the campus team that developed and was awarded the initial NIH Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training (BEST) funding in 2013. The NIH BEST award allowed the campus to establish the Frontiers of University Training to Unlock the Research Enterprise (FUTURE) program, which is currently supported by the UC Davis Clinical and Translational Science Center and the School of Medicine.
